Will marketers become more accountable in 2018?

It’s generally accepted that the world marketers are moving into this year is one that is, in some ways, financially unstable.

Some of the world’s biggest media agencies, including the likes of Zenith Optimedia and GroupM have significantly lowered their profit forecasts, and there is also a general slowing of revenue growth elsewhere in the industry.

While it isn’t all doom and gloom, and there is a lot of growth in advertising elsewhere, there is certainly a sense that many companies are having to tighten their purse strings when it comes to their marketing.

What this means is that there will be increased accountability for marketers in the coming year. They must be able to prove that what they are providing is an investment that will lead to growth and profit. Some of the biggest FMCG businesses are focusing more than ever before on efficiency, and this is a trend that looks set to continue.

It is important, therefore, to adjust to the changing times and be able to explain where every part of their budget is going, and why exactly this is wise spending. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Diamonds are made under pressure, and this year is certain to have a lot of that, but it will give marketers the chance to prove themselves as an incredibly valuable asset to any company.

It’s best to prepare for the challenges in this new year by establishing specifically where, why and how company money is being invested when it comes to marketing and advertising.
