Why you should get your head into virtual reality (VR)

Virtual reality (VR) has tiptoed fairly quietly into our lives but early signs suggest it is only going to get bigger. The two words ‘Oculus Rift’ are synonymous with the explosion of this technology and Samsung has certainly arrived early at the VR table. As a marketer, this technology probably feels untouchable right now because it lies in the domain of the early adopters and budget-rich. Yet if you can get your head around VR now, you can lead the way in planning a unique application for it when it becomes affordable. Deloitte Global estimate that VR will reach $700m in hardware sales in 2016, with an additional $300m coming from content. They anticipate 2.5 million VR headsets will be sold this year complemented by 10 million game sales.

Broadly we can expect VR to enable fully immersive experiences. In the same way that the internet provided the means for a small shop in one location to sell worldwide, VR will take your customers and prospects anywhere they want to go or where you lead them. Fully virtual events can replace webinars, allowing your audience to walk through presentations and demonstrations of your own creation. Ultimately, other than the cost to create the experience, application is almost limitless. To be ready for this technology, it is important to experience it yourself as soon as possible. You will find inspiration for new ways to reach your customers as you take a walk along a virtual beach or experience life under the sea.

Every modern marketer should be naturally curious about game changing technology and VR is certainly that! When VR comes within your reach, you should be ready to take full advantage of it. Employers are increasingly demanding digital expertise from their marketers and VR knowledge will keep your skillset fresh for future marketing and digital marketing jobs.
