Marketing skills – what are you made of?

Marketers today require a multitude of skills.

Whether you’re a generalist, specialist or ‘T-shaped’ marketer, there’s a role out there for you –  but you need to decide what you excel at, and importantly, what you most enjoy doing.

Writing skills

We all know ‘content is king’ in the online world, so being a marketer requires excellent writing skills. You should have impeccable grammar and spelling (don’t just rely on Word’s spell-checker) and always proofread everything you write.

Technical skills

Increasingly, employers are looking for basic technical skills in video production, image editing and programming from their new marketing recruits. Having at least one of these skills will give you greater independence, as you won’t need to get someone’s help whenever you need a piece of content changed.

Data interpretation

With ‘big data’ becoming one of the buzzwords of the last few years, being able to understand and interpret marketing-related data has become an indispensable skill for marketers. You should know your way around Excel and have an understanding of website analytics; this won’t just increase your job prospects, it will also make you a better marketer – someone who makes effective data-driven decisions.
