Has your passion for marketing faded away?

The world of marketing should always be full of excitement and adrenaline, so if you haven’t felt this for a while it may be time to consider a new position. As much as you may have loved your marketing job in the past, things can change over time. You may have grown bored or you may be thinking it’s time to specialise. Whatever it is, you need to rediscover your drive and passion for marketing before it’s too late.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for a new role.

Are you looking for more creativity?

Perhaps you’ve been an account manager for some time; maybe you do market research. These roles can be well suited for some but for other people, they just don’t scream ‘marketing’. If your dream marketing career is all about creativity, then it’s time to step away from these positions and find something more suitable. If you’ve got a way with words and a natural curiosity about anything and everything, consider a career as a copywriter; likewise, if you see the world through an interplay of pictures and colours, and you have a knack for working with software like Adobe Creative Cloud, there’s plenty of graphic design jobs out there. Try and identify what makes you creative, and research roles that will benefit from your skills.

Are you bored of the same old, same old?

This is often a problem faced by client-side marketers. Joining an in-house team can allow you to develop within a company and understand their product inside out, but you may also grow frustrated from working in the same industry for years on end. It can extinguish your creative spark. If this is the problem you’re faced with, look into joining an agency, where variety will be at the heart of your work, bouncing from project to project, experiencing different industries at the same time.

Are you looking for more involvement?

Many people get bored of their marketing role because they aren’t getting involved enough in the project. Some of us want to get stuck in with the client or project leaders. We want to really put our stamp on each project. If this sounds familiar, then now you need to look at more project management roles where you can have a voice. If you work in an agency, look at account management roles and what they could offer you.
