5 areas to focus on for your next interview

Working in the digital world, we all know how rapid the pace of change can be. For those who will be interviewing for their next digital marketing job, preparing for the interview can be a lot wider-ranging than just your area of expertise. To that end we have put together a list of five areas all digital marketers should have a broad knowledge of and should be able to speak about (at length) in an interview:

1. Whether SEO is dead, alive, dying, or simply misunderstood

The tech world is awash with articles describing SEO in one of these states, and, regardless of your speciality, the subject will come up. Keep an eye on industry sites like Search Engine Land for the latest news, but, as a whole, research how you think SEO is evolving as search engines change.

2. The rise of content marketing

The idea of using written, visual or audio content to sell products or services has been around since the dawn of marketing, but content marketing has seen a huge resurgence in recent years. It is well worth knowing at least a little about its benefits, along with examples.

3. Social advertising

Instagram is the latest social channel to really adapt to get brands to spend on social advertising. Knowing about the reach and highly customisable targeting can only be a feather in your cap. Better still, have a think about how your new company could use social ads effectively.

4. Digital v traditional marketing

Do you believe digital marketing is fundamentally the same or different to more traditional, offline marketing? And what is your argument to back that opinion up? Have a serious think about this one – and how the company you are interviewing for is set up, from a marketing perspective – and be prepared to talk about it. This is an increasingly common subject in interviews.

5. Mobile

As the world becomes increasingly mobile, learning how this impacts strategy and tactics across all digital fields is huge. Make sure you know how it is effecting your potential new employer and have some ideas ready!
