The potency of a marketing portfolio

As the marketing industry in the UK expands – in line with a huge growth in the amount of media we consume, and the marketing-friendly channels we consume through – so do the number of CVs piling up on the desks of potential recruiters.

You might have given your CV a servicing, updating certain sections and making sure it focuses on the skill sets most relevant in today’s market. While your resume may read like an impressive pitch for available marketing jobs, for many companies that recruiting, it’ll be a case of “seen it all before”. Marketing related degree? Check. Social media expert? Check. Has run digital campaigns? Check. You’re competing with a group of candidates who are very likely to have similar skills to your own.

So how do you give yourself the edge in a marketing recruitment landscape that promises so much, but can sometimes appear to offer less? Like many things in life, you get out what you put in, and for this reason, spending some time putting together a portfolio of your work can pay dividends in the future.

It isn’t as time consuming as you may think. If you’ve been saving and filing, or still have access to your best pieces of work, now is the time to use them to give you a step up on the career ladder. Showcase your most successful projects, summarising the objective and results.

You can use your CV as a template to structure your portfolio, which shouldn’t be more than ten pages long when produced digitally or in print.

Are you looking at digital marketing jobs and have claimed on your CV to have experience building follower and fan bases from scratch? Then your portfolio is your chance to bring this tool in your armoury to life. Take a screen grab of the most successful accounts you’ve managed, showing the current number of followers or fans and levels of engagement.

Whichever projects you include, remember that testimonials from clients or colleagues are gold dust, and in a marketing portfolio they have the perfect home to wow your future employer.
