How experienced content writers can create the perfect CV

Content writers are an essential part of any successful digital marketing strategy, and this means that as someone with experience your services will be highly sought after by big businesses and small. Yet competition for the most attractive roles is fierce, and unless you’re talking the talk on your resume, you won’t get the chance to walk the walk.

Luckily for you, you have a major advantage over most other professions: you know how to sell things. The trick is to expand this to include yourself, so if you have career progression in mind, here’s what you ought to be doing on your CV…

Your personal statement

Every good CV should include a personal statement, the object being to give an insight into your personality and mind-set. Within it, you want to elucidate the kind of senior employment you’re seeking, and this means setting aside generic phrases to share that provide overview of your skill set, and focusing on the sort of position you’re interested in. Keep it to a paragraph or two, and ensure that this is concise, error-free, and persuasive – if you can’t write well on your CV, you’re not selling yourself as a strong candidate in your chosen field of employment.

Your educational qualifications

Although your educational qualifications may be impressive, they’re less likely to count than your experience when you’re applying for senior marketing roles, and this means that you can keep this section to a minimum. List your A-levels and university degree, but focus more heavily on any vocation-specific professional development training as it is this that will provide the kudos necessary to help you stand out from the crowd.

Your work experience

The work experience section of your CV is the most important, and where you’re applying for senior positions, only list what is entirely relevant. This segment should be neatly organised, with details of prior job roles and the assignments you worked on clearly and concisely listed in reverse date order. Focus on establishing the breadth of your experience, as knowledge of an array of sectors will be a big plus point in your favour. Freelance work should always be included here, and will help to earn you extra merit as it demonstrates that you’re talented enough to make your way outside of agency or big business parameters. You should also specifically hone in on the positions of authority you’ve held, and the projects and campaigns you’ve overseen, as these will best demonstrate the quality of leadership required for the most senior roles.

Your specialisations and skills

You may want to add an additional section on your specialisations and skills, where you reiterate the transferable talents you possess in your field of expertise, such as design, editing, and so on. These can be listed in bullet point format if you wish to keep the word count down. Though short, this segment could be the make or break between you and another writer if your educational qualifications and working history are on a par, so try to include assets that specifically recommend you for the role you’re applying to, and that highlight your experience and seniority in the content writing field.
